2011 Series review: Part 2 FIM e-Power

Random thoughts of the week: Tesla and more 2013 Zero S vs. Empulse

There’s a few things about Tesla that I want to say.  First, I am learning what a junior high culture the stock market culture really seems to be.  Elon Musk tweets some cryptic tweets and stocks jump?  Really?  Explains a lot really.  But I’m not going to bother guessing what its about since everyone else [...]

Three-Wheeled EPIC Torq Roadster Is Pure EV Performance

Torq-Roadster-1While automobile designers have stayed with the tried-and-true four-wheeled setup on automobiles, there have always been those willing to try something...different. EPIC EVs has rolled out their all-electric Torq Roadster, a performance-focused electric vehicle offering perhaps the most fun you can have on three wheels.

Not unlike the Morgan three-wheeler of old, the EPIC EV Torq Roadster features two wheel in the front, one wheel in the back, and a combination of high-thrills fun and emissions free driving that only electric vehicles can offer. The carbon fiber body panels and polycarbonate windscreen and a high-tech suspension are just a few of the lightweight features that help make this three-wheeled EV a nimble corner carver.

But there is more to the Torq Roadster than just making tight turns. The electric motor powering the lone rear wheel offers an astounding 400 horsepower and 600 ft-lbs of torque, allowing the Torq Roadster to achieve up to 1.3 Gs of lateral acceleration. For comparison's sake, the 2013 Corvette ZR1 with 638 horsepower and a $110,000 price tag can only achieve up to 1.1 Gs of lateral acceleration.

Don't expect to find an EPIC EVs Torq Roadster at your next car meet though. Building of these three-wheeled EVs is scheduled to begin sometime in 2014, and just 50 examples are planned for production. As for pricing, no word yet, but it is definitely one of those "If you have to ask, you can't afford it" situations.

Video: BBC Profiles Lord Drayson And His 200 MPH Electric Race Car

drayson-racingElectric race cars are finally starting to be taken seriously, and at the forefront of this clean, green racing innovation is Britain's Lord Drayson. Drayson's latest contribution is a lightweight, all-electric race car that he claims can hit 200 mph, and the BBC recently profiled this racing revelation.

The carbon fiber exoskeleton harbors the battery and drivetrain of the Drayson electric race car, which won't compete in the new Formula E series as soon as next year. While Drayson is keen to point out the four Oxford-designed electric motors, as well as the 200 mph top speed, range and recharging were not discussed at at all.

Drayson's EV racer won't compete most likely because of just these issues, though in fairness the car is being billed as a testbed for new technology, rather than an actual competitor. McLaren and racing companies are penning electric race cars of their own design, so the good Lord has plenty of competition. We can't wait to see who comes out on top.

Dutch-Built Hydrogen Racer Aims For Nurburgring Record

forze-1The Nurbrugring has served as a testing ground for new vehicle technologies for decades now, and automakers are really bringing it all to this German test track. But it isn't just billion-dollar corporations pioneering alt-fuel technologies. A Dutch university has spent five years developing the Forze 6, a hydrogen powered race car that will make its Nurburgring debut this spring.

The University of TU Delft has developed a hydrogen-powered race car that they claim will go from 0-60 mph in less than 4 seconds, with a top speed of over 130 mph, or 220 kph. While hardly the fastest thing on four wheels, the whole hydrogen-powered bit is sure to raise a few eyebrows.

Two electric motors provide a combined output of 260 horsepower, again, hardly impressive. However, the curb weight of just 1,600 pounds, or about 800 kgs, will allow this little clean racer to dip around the Nurburgring with ease. It'll be in good company this year too; Aston Martin is bringing a hydrogen-powered Rapide to the 'Ring later this year, and the Green GT hydrogen race car should be back at the 24 Hours of Le mans.

Hydrogen powered race cars seem to be the hot new commodity. But will hydrogen fuel every break into the mainstream?

Nissan Prepping All-Electric 24 Hours Of Le Mans Racer?

24-hours-leafIt's hard to believe that it is already March, and in a few short months the 24 Hours of Le Mans will once again race into the history books. There's a lot of talk about this year's famous endurance race, including what car Nissan will contribute to the experimental "Garage 56". With Nissan no longer backing the DeltaWing racer, rumor has it that the Japanese automaker could field a pure-electric race car.

While Nissan did not explicitly say they would bring a pure-electric race car to Le Mans, it would make a lot of sense; the Japanese giant has sunk billions of dollars into the Leaf EV, and so far sales are not what executives hoped for. Nissan really needs to give its electric car efforts a shot in the arm, and a pure electric race car debuting at the world's oldest endurance race could be the jolt it needs.

Specfically, Nissan said that their Le Mans entry " targeting a return to the Le Mans 24 Hours in 2014 with a pioneering Nissan race car showcasing electric technology." Now that could imply a pure electric, a hybrid, or simply a modified version of the Nissan Leaf NISMO Competizone RC. We're hoping to something completely new and different though.

Last year Nissan backed the efforts of the DeltaWing team, which is working to produce a race car that uses half the fuel, half the horsepower, and half the tires, while still going as fast as current competitors. The DeltaWing will compete for points this year, and it will be joined by another experimental race car, the hydrogen-powered Green GT.

Nissan needs to prop up its own flagging EV models...and there isn't anyplace better to get a lot of auto enthusiast attention than the 24 Hours of Le Mans. What are you guessing Nissan brings to the track at this year's Le Mans race?

Dallara Building Official Chassis For Formula E Series

dallara-formula-e-2For electric car racing fans, the upcoming Formula E series is something worth getting excited about. With some of the biggest names in Formula One racing pledging to participate in this fledgling series, Formula E could be the series that gets young people excited about electric cars. With Italy's Dallara Automobili now committed to building the official Formula E racing chassis, we can start visualizing the future of electric motorsports.

The Formula E series is offering competitors a choice of entering their own electric race car design, or of buying an officially sanctioned and designed car. Spark Racing Technology, a group of companies working to make the Formula E a reality, has released these first sketches. McLaren has been charged with building a drivetrain called the SRT_01E for the Formula E racers, and rumor has it a mid-race car swap will be necessary for the hour-long competitions.

With Italy's Dallara designing the chassis, Spark has released some sketches of what the official Formula E racer will look like. Other Formula One outfits, like Bluebird Racing and Drayson Racing, will be entering Formula E race cars of their own design. The Dallara design borrows heavily from Formula One, and race weight is said to be around 1,700 pounds thanks to lightweight materials like carbon fiber.

The Formula E series is set to debut in 2014, and will be hosted in at least ten city centers including places like Rome, San Paulo, London, and perhaps even New York City. This is the future of motorsports; let's hope Dallara is up to the task.

Video: Volar-E Electric Race Car Boasts 1,000 Horsepower

volar-eElectric supercars have suddenly become quite popular with the well-heeled elite, and companies with almost no automotive experience are designing performance EVs to tap into this emerging market. Spanish industrial firm Applus Idiada just unveiled the Volar-e, an all-electric supercar they claim has a peak output of 1,000 horsepower.

Utilizing four separate electric motors and a 38 kWh battery pack made up of 10 individual cells, the Volar-e is the latest addition to an ever-growing stable of electric supercars. Charging time is said to take between just 15 and 20 minutes thanks to a unique fast charger, and the four electric motors produce a combined 737 ft-lbs of torque.

According to Applus Idiada, this is good for a 0-60 mph time of just 3.4 seconds, and an electronically governed top speed of 186 mph. That makes it just as fast as the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Electric Drive supercar, though there is no word on range or, of course, price. The Volar-e also faces competition from the Rimac Concept_One EV, which also boasts around 1,000 horsepower.

But to us, any electric car with performance aspirations is well worth writing about. Just don't expect to see one parked outside your office anytime soon.
