Toyota is planning to return to the LeMans racing circuit in 2012 with a "green" hybrid-electric race car.  They withdrew from the French race 13 years ago, and from Formula 1 racing in 2009, due to business losses.

Toyota's prototype LMP1 chassis, designed in Germany, will be propelled by a gasoline-electric hybrid powertrain, which is being prepared by the company's engineers in Japan. The car is expected to be rolled out around the turn of the year before undergoing extensive tests in early 2012.

In August Toyota brought an electric race car to the Nurburgring, set a lap record for that track, and proclaimed they would be the best choice to supply drive trains to an all electric race car series.
