Electric car goes the distance in Ireland’s Cannonball Run

A Nissan LEAF was the first electric car to ever enter a Cannonball Run anywhere on the globe.  It has successfully completed a 900km tour of Ireland’s roads over the Sept 3-4 2011 weekend.

The race involved 150 supercars such as the Porsche Cayman, Ferraris and Lamborghinis, as well as glamorous Bentley and Aston Martin models.  Among the gas hogs was a Nissan LEAF operated by ESB ecars.

A key to their success was a publicly accessible fast charge point in Topaz Athlone, that ESB had installed just before the Canonball Run as part of their Ireland-wide rollout of electric vehicle charging stations.

"We are delighted to have been involved in this action-packed three-day event to raise funds and awareness for Barretstown. There was overwhelming support from the general public for this worthy cause and indeed for the electric car as it travelled around the country. We are thrilled to have successfully completed the Cannonball Run and have the opportunity to showcase the full scope of the electric car on Irish roads," said Paul Mulvaney, managing director, ESB ecars.
